It once radiated from within with laughter and constant movement; people shuffling in and out, ever growing, ever changing. The house remained the same as always, a haven, a sanctuary guarded by a blue commander and his red soldiers. Then the real soldiers materialized. I moved across the ballroom floor lifelessly, at the mercy and lead of
Bachelor Number 3.
My mother had made a list of men I “ought” to, meaning, “must,” dance with.
She claimed they were the “suitable,” meaning “rich,” gentlemen.
Bachelor No. 3 was old, boring, and currently droning on about his summer home
in Manchester. Apparently it was quite pretty.
I smiled hollowly. “Oh, that sounds divine, Mr. Worthington! Do tell me more
about your lovely cottage!”
