WarThe house once stood proud, gleaming white with fire engine red shutters and a glossy navy blue door. It once radiated from within with laughter and constant movement; people shuffling in and out, ever growing, ever changing. The house remained the same as always, a haven, a sanctuary guarded by a blue commander and his red soldiers. Then the real soldiers materialized. Marching in armies of grey, always grey, clashing and colliding, bickering like couples who realized too late the consequences of their actions.War

I moved across the ballroom floor lifelessly, at the mercy and lead of
Bachelor Number 3.
My mother had made a list of men I “ought” to, meaning, “must,” dance with.
She claimed they were the “suitable,” meaning “rich,” gentlemen.
Bachelor No. 3 was old, boring, and currently droning on about his summer home
in Manchester. Apparently it was quite pretty.
I smiled hollowly. “Oh, that sounds divine, Mr. Worthington! Do tell me more
about your lovely cottage!”
